I recently got to experience the W Hotel Washington DC, when I stayed two nights for a weekend trip. This hip, modern hotel was a great experience and location for my quick trip.
I picked this spot because it’s a Starwood property, and as a frequent Delta flyer I get crossover rewards points! For more on travel rewards programs, read my post here.
Now, let’s chat about the W Washington DC.
The location of the W Hotel in Washington DC couldn’t be better. If you pay a little more to have a view, you’ll be looking right at the Washington monument, and the hotel is practically across the street from the White House, so it’s a great spot if you’re looking to do traditional tourist things and see the mall and all of the sites.
I looked up a couple of distances to give you a sense of just how close the hotel is to the monuments:
- To the White House: 0.3 Miles, or a 6 min walk.
- To the Washington Monument: 0.6 Miles, or a 12 min walk.
- To the Lincoln Memorial: 1.3 Miles, or a 26 min walk.
- To the United States Capitol: 1.5 Miles, or a 31 min walk.
It’s also very close to the metro center stop on the metro (0.3 miles, or a 6 min walk). The subway in DC is pretty easy to navigate, so you’ll be able to walk to this stop and then to navigate to much of DC from there.
For suggestions of where to eat in the area, check out my post about where to eat during your DC monument hike, and for even more DC tips from a local, read my interview with local DC resident and fashion blogger Laura Lehman.
The room was clean and pretty standard, with a very modern design aesthetic. I didn’t really take pictures because I was so busy on this trip that I was hardly there during daylight hours at all! Forgive me!
The design of the whole hotel is hip and modern and when you walk into the lobby in the evening, it feels a bit like you’re walking into a club, with dim lighting and music. They play up the political environment with a bunch of modern portraits of past presidents and even Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump, as this was just a few days before the election.
If you’re really looking to dance, though, you’ll want to hit the rooftop bar, POV, on a Friday or Saturday night. Super convenient to go “out” in your own hotel!
Not to worry, if you’re not into the party atmosphere, the noise did not make it to my room. And, during the day, the rooftop bar is actually a lovely place to have lunch or an afternoon drink, with views of the White House and Washington Monument.
The Little Things
I have to say, I love that they have Bliss products in the room. The soap smells SO good and I took the little lotion to keep in my travel bag for future travels. I always grab the lotion when there are really high quality products in my hotel rooms, because flying is so drying for my skin!
Though I had requested a coffee maker (aka giver of life) in my room before my arrival, it was not in the room when I arrived. I called down and they brought it up right away, though! Seriously, that guy must have run down the hall because he showed up so fast.
I got the impression, from the emails I received before and during my stay, that the concierge staff was really intent on helping me out with anything I needed. Unfortunately, I didn’t really get to put them to the test since I was busy with a writing workshop, which was the reason for my trip.
I also received a tray of fruit sent up to my room upon arrival, compliments of the hotel. I have no idea why they sent that up to me, if I did anything special or if they do that for everyone, but it was a really nice touch!
I had breakfast in the hotel restaurant and it was good, and I really liked the design and feel of the restaurant space. There were huge windows, which was nice to see the fall colors, and there’s some outdoor seating when it’s nice out.
Overall, I’d say this is a great hotel for younger people looking to be treated like a princess/ prince and have a luxurious stay with a cocktail in hand. The vibe of the whole place made me feel a little more hip just for staying there, and I had a lovely stay. I only wish I had been able to actually spend more time at the hotel and at POV. Maybe next time I’m here I’ll get the chance!
Have you stayed in a W hotel before? Let me know in the comments what your experience was like!
