After booking through a Black Friday hotel deal, Dustin and I were lucky enough to spend a long weekend in Playa Del Carmen. This January weekend was absolutely perfect (though, it could have been longer…) and we absolutely loved lounging by the pool and enjoying the sand and the surf (not to mention the food!) while our friends froze in Minnesota. We stayed at the Thompson Playa Del Carmen, and I just had to share my opinion on this luxury hotel in the PDC.
We stayed at the main hotel, but you should also know that there is another Thompson hotel just 2 blocks away, the Thompson Beach House. That one is right on the sand, and we visited the pool, beach and restaurant at that building, but we didn’t stay there.
Keep reading to find out what I thought…
The Thompson Playa Del Carmen is very centrally located, right on 5th Avenue in downtown Playa Del Carmen, which is the main street with all of the shopping. This means that the area around the hotel is very busy, and a bit loud. While the hotel isn’t located on the beach, it’s only about 2 blocks away, and they do have the beach house there, so you can go to that beach/pool area if you need a bit of sand.
We loved being in such a central area, as it took Dustin only minutes to run to Starbucks for me in the morning, and there were a bunch of restaurants and shops right outside our door. Unlike many of the hotels in the area, the Thompson is not all-inclusive, which we were happy about since it gave us the opportunity to try different restaurants in the area.
I will say, the view from the rooftop is still amazing even though the hotel isn’t directly on the sand. You still get that ocean view, and it’s a lovely place to spend a day (or a few…).
The room was very nice, we opted for a Luxury King room because we wanted the terrace, and we were so happy to have it. We sat out on the terrace every morning to sip coffee and read. I absolutely love having my coffee on a balcony in a new place, where I can just enjoy the quiet of the morning and listen to the town waking up around me. Especially since PDC is such a party town, it didn’t really “wake up” very early, so we felt very serene in the mornings.
That said, if you’re imagining a nice private terrace, you wouldn’t get that here. As lovely as they are, they’re on the busy main road, and people can look at you from a floor or two below. I didn’t mind, but it’s something to be aware of.
One thing I will say, is that this hotel is a bit on the noisy side for my taste. I’m a bit of a grandma, and after a whole day of sipping margaritas by the pool, I was ready for bed fairly early most nights (plus, this was only days after the Playa Del Carmen shooting/stampede incident that killed 5 people, and that club was like a block away, so we weren’t super into the idea of partying here anyway, not that we ever felt unsafe).
When we tried to turn in early, there was loud club music booming in our room. The hotel staff were happy to bring us earplugs, and I slept just fine in the end, but if you’re looking for a quieter atmosphere, I might check out the beach house instead.
We ate at all of the hotel’s restaurants: Catch and Cinco at the main hotel, and C-Grill at the beach house. We weren’t very impressed with Catch, honestly, but enjoyed the evening views from the rooftop. Cinco serves brunch all day, and the food was pretty good, though not particularly groundbreaking (though, we really loved the waffle with peanut butter and bacon on it). We also tried some of the signature drinks at Cinco, and the Thompson Spritz was our favorite. C-Grill was definitely the best of the three restaurants, I had shrimp that were very good, and we loved that we got to eat on the beach at that one.
They also do a daily (!) tequila tasting at the beach house, which we did one day. We got to try 4 kinds of tequila and we learned so much about the different kinds of tequila and each found a new favorite that we’ve since bought bottles of. We love learning about food and alcohol, and doing tastings and cooking classes, so this was a treat for us. I would highly recommend that you check it out.
This is the real reason you want to stay at the Thompson Playa Del Carmen… the rooftop was absolutely amazing. Everyday, we would wake up and ask ourselves “do we want to go be tourists today?” and the answer was always nope, let’s go to the roof.
The rooftop at the Thompson has a pool in the middle, with a restaurant on either side, one of which has a swim up bar area. Even if you aren’t at the swim up bar, the staff is very attentive and will bring you drinks all day long. We loved hanging out in the pool, and ended up having great conversations with other hotel guests there and just enjoying our time together, completely stress-free.
They even put out cute pool floats that you can jump on for a picture. Awesome!
Overall, I would totally recommend the Thompson Playa Del Carmen hotel. If you’re looking for a quieter stay, check out the beach house. I’d also suggest that you avoid the food at Catch, but otherwise, I guarantee you’ll have a great time. We’re already planning our trip for next year, and definitely considering staying here again.
