Happy Wednesday everyone! For the first installment of my destination wedding planning series, I’m very excited to share some engagement photos that we did with the lovely Trish of Trish Allison Photography. Initially, I wasn’t even sure that I wanted engagement photos at all, since we’re not using them on our save the date. It seemed like an unnecessary expense, honestly. But then I got to thinking about it, and I decided that, since we’re getting married in Arizona, it would be nice to have some Minnesota photos to celebrate our home.
Here are some of my favorite shots that Trish captured for us:
We ended up doing these pictures in the backyard at my mom’s house, which happens to be on a beautiful lake. Since Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes, it worked out perfectly for us. Trish was so easy to work with, and she kept chatting with us the whole time, which was great because it kept the experience from feeling forced or awkward. Let’s face it, smooching with a camera right in front of your face can be a little weird, but Trish was so kind and calm that it helped us relax! Plus, it was good practice for our wedding, when we’ll be smooching away in front of lots of people and cameras.
One of the hardest things to decide when we decided to do an engagement shoot was what to wear! After all, how do you know what will coordinate and also photograph well? We decided to keep it pretty neutral and also to pick things that we felt comfortable in. I went with white (hello, bridal!) and wore this Lily Pulitzer dress. Dustin found this Untuckit shirt and wore neutral pants with it. I think the texture of my dress with the pattern on his shirt gives enough visual interest to the photos, without being overwhelming. We both wore boat shoes to play up the lake vibes.
It was also great that Trish was willing to shoot with our dog, Lia. I know it’s challenging to have to get a pup to look at the camera and hold still, but she worked really well with Lia and we ended up with this image, which is my favorite of the whole bunch:
I’m so blessed to have my sweet little family.
So, those are our engagement photos! Have any questions about posing, outfits, or planning your engagement session?Ask away in the comments!
We actually ended up booking a wedding photographer whose packages include an engagement session, so this ended up being the first of two engagement sessions! Stay tuned for the other one to come sometime in the fall (hopefully).
