In the latest installment of my destination wedding planning series, I’m excited to show off the way I asked my girls to stand up with me (and Dustin’s guys to stand with him!).
When Dustin and I first got engaged, I wasn’t sure that I wanted bridesmaids. In fact, I was sure I didn’t want a bridal party at all. To me, it just seemed like I would be asking my close friends to spend a lot of money to ruin our friendship. That’s a little reductive, but seriously, I wanted such a small wedding that just being invited meant we were close, I didn’t want to rank friends by how much I like them, or make anyone feel bad that they didn’t make the cut.
All of that changed, though, when Dustin spoke up and said he really wanted at least a couple guys by his side. He pointed out that both of us are pretty introverted, and having a friend nearby might make us more comfortable standing up in front of all of our loved ones and saying our vows. I wasn’t 100% convinced, but in the name of learning to compromise (#marriageskills) I conceded, and we each selected 3 close friends to be in our wedding party. We also picked a pair of ushers.
My stipulation? We had to ask them to stand with us in a super cute way, of course!
The Bridesmaid & Groomsmen Proposals
After doing a little research and thinking about practicality (we had 4 out-of-state bridesmaids and groomsmen, so glasses and bottles of champagne were out), I came across these Sugarfina bridesmaid proposal candies. We love Sugarfina— I’m crazy about their champagne gummy bears (because who wouldn’t love those?!) and I got Dustin a vice collection set as a gift last year and he loved it. It was an easy choice to order the bridesmaid sets, which come with stickers on them that say “will you be my bridesmaid?”
They don’t have a matching set for the groomsmen, so we picked the vice collection, which has 3 boozy treats as well, and I made a little label on photoshop to insert the question in the candy box.
I loved the element of surprise, since you had to actually open the candy box to see the question. The bridesmaids sets came with a sleeve that said “will you…” but I wanted to keep it a surprise, so I just took those off.
Since we’re doing a destination wedding, I also went on Zazzle and had some luggage tags made for everyone. The girls’ had their names and the boys’ had their initials.
I made another little printable on photoshop to tell everyone to pack their bags, and I slid that into the spot where their name and address goes.
From there, I just added some sparkle to the box with the foil strips (you can get them at target) and even painted the inside of the ladies boxes gold (I mean business when it comes to gold sparkle). I added a couple of personal photos, and I was ready to send them!
What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
The Usher Proposals
We didn’t want a big wedding party, but we still wanted a couple of our good friends to be involved, so we made them ushers. I hate that element of ranking your friends and some people feeling left out, so we wanted to still do something special to ask them to be a part of our wedding day.
For our ushers, I got two little Sugarfina candy cubes for each of them. They’re both beer drinkers, so I wanted to be sure to get the pale ale pints, which don’t come in the vice collection set, so that’s why we went with a pair of cubes for them. We also did the maple bourbon caramels because they’re Dustin’s favorite.
I made another cute little label on photoshop to pop the question to them. I feel like this is some of my strongest photoshop work, lol. I googled and found a picture of Usher to include, and then made them to look like little luggage tags to keep with the travel theme. I think they turned out great!
They Said Yes!
The worst part of the process was waiting to hear from them. I was so nervous that someone would say no (I know, irrational fear, but still) so it was nerve-racking. One thing we learned is that our friends don’t check their mail very often, which made the wait even worse. In the end, though, they all said yes!
Tell me in the comments what you think of my proposals! If you’re married, how did you ask your wedding party to stand with you?
